Basics for Backyard Fruit Production:  Fruit Trees, Grapes, and Berries
Outdoor Garden Clinic at Eden Now Gardens, 303 Chandler St, Leland, MI
An introduction to growing a wide variety of fruits in your backyard.   In this session you will have a chance to visit the back yard of Richard Allen, who will provide an educational tour of his yard, while discussing pruning, trellising, pest control, mulch, composting, and propagation.  This class is a collaboration of the Leelanau Community Cultural Center and the Leelanau County MSU Extension Home Horticultural Program. This session will be outdoors at a private home, so please come prepared for the current weather conditions. Starting a Home Food Garden from Scratch
Northwest Michigan Horticultural Research Center, 6686 S. Center Highway, Traverse City
This session, intended for all levels of gardeners, will cover the basics of getting a home food garden started.  Bring your ideas for what you’d like to do with your space (containers, garden plot, edible landscaping, raised beds, etc), and the presenter can work with you on achieving your goals. A home food garden is easier to get going than you might think…why not start now?  Please register in advance by calling 256-8323.  This program is offered free of charge, however a $7 per person donation is suggested to help cover costs.  Instructor: Mike Davis, Advanced Master Gardener Volunteer.

Composting for the Home Gardener

Healthy plants start with healthy soil. This session will provide an overview of how enrich your garden soil with compost created from waste from your kitchen and yard.  Learn about different techniques for composting, what to include, and how to use it in your garden.  It is easy – compost happens!  Please register in advance by calling 256-8323.  This program is offered free of charge, however a $7 per person donation is suggested to help cover costs. Open House at the Leelanau Community Garden
Come visit one of the longest running community gardens in all of Michigan!  This garden is celebrating its 20th anniversary this season, and is opening its doors for wider involvement by the community. Come learn how you can get involved with this garden, either by adopting a plot to grow your own vegetables, and/or to volunteer your time to help grow vegetables for donation to the area’s needy.  Even, if you just have some gardening questions, come visit the garden, and chat with some experienced gardeners!  There is no charge to attend, and participants will leave with a door prize!   No registration required. If you have questions, please call 256-8323.  The garden is located across the road from the tasting room of 45 North Winery, located at 8580 E. Horn Road, Lake Leelanau.

Organic Vegetable Gardening

Growing Heirlooms and Saving Seeds

This session, for gardeners interested in learning to saving their own seeds, will cover fundamentals of this almost forgotten practice, along with reasons for doing so.  Rather than depending on seed companies for what  you can plant in your garden, why not learn to grow your own seeds, and tap into a whole world of heirloom vegetables?  Topics include:  reasons for saving seeds, favorite heirloom varieties for our region, different approaches required for different plant families, hand pollination and isolation techniques, and storage of seeds.  If you have been saving seeds and wish to bring some to share with others, please do!  This program is offered free of charge, however a $7 per person donation is suggested to help cover costs. Growing Grapes in the Backyard

Are you thinking of growing grapes in your home garden?  Or have some grapes already and wondering what to do with them?  This session will provide an introduction to growing table and wine grapes.  Topics to be addressed include variety selection; site requirements and preparation; vine structure and growth; planting and early care; trellising and arbors; vine training and pruning; renovation of old vines; and pest management.  The cost is $15 per person.  Please register in advance by calling 256-8323.  Instructor:  Dr. Duke Elsner, Small Fruit Educator (specializing in viticulture & wine education) Michigan State University Extension.

Backyard Tree Fruit

This presentation will include an introduction to the following topics related to growing tree fruit in a backyard setting:  variety selection; selection of rootstocks; planting tips; tree nutrition; proper training of young trees and early care; insect and disease control (conventional and organic); pruning; and protection from wildlife.  The cost is $15 per person.  Please register by May 11th by calling 256-8323.  A limited selection of fruit trees will be available for purchase on site.  Instructor:  Steve Fouch, retired MSUE Consumer Horticultural Educator, and current owner of L&S Tree Health Care Service and Nursery.
